Madekwe was born into an ethnically mixed family. She has a mother who is English while her father is Nigerian. She grew up in the south of a London council estate, and went to The Brit School at age 14. She studied acting in The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. While at the academy, she performed in several stage productions such as The King Henry V playing Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights portraying Catherine Earnshaw. Madekwe began her acting career by starring in a movie titled Storm Damage. In the years since, she's been a guest star on Teachers, Doctors, Casualty and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Madekwe's breakthrough came in 2007's Woody Allen movie Cassandra's Dream. It was in the role of Colin Farrell (who played the character of Cassandra) and Ewan McGrath.
